Punjab Kings’ Social Media Strategy Stumbles as Rajasthan Royals Dance into IPL Playoffs

Punjab Kings Face Backlash After Playoff Exit as Rajasthan Royals Celebrate

On Sunday, May 24, Punjab Kings found themselves on the wrong side of a social media blunder after their hopes for playoff advancement were dashed by Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals clinched the crucial fourth playoff spot by defeating the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, pushing Punjab Kings out of the contention.

Punjab Kings have often been criticized for their bold social media tactics. This time, their attempts to poke fun at opponents came back to haunt them. After securing their place in the playoffs, Rajasthan Royals cleverly replied to Punjab’s earlier tweet—“Sorry bhai, aaj nahi!”—with a humorous meme featuring actor Arjun Kapoor. The meme depicts Kapoor stranded outside a door while others enter, perfectly capturing the irony of Punjab’s last-minute exit.

Background of the Online Banter

The tension between the two teams can be traced back to earlier exchanges on social media. Punjab’s tweet was a jab at Rajasthan after the Royals suffered a defeat to Delhi Capitals on May 1. This was a classic case of tit for tat, as Rajasthan had also taken a jab at Punjab after defeating them earlier in the season, referencing a tweet from Bollywood star Salman Khan.

In that instance, Rajasthan paired a video clip of player Donovan Ferreira celebrating their victory over Punjab with the line: “Hold for it… ‘Sorry bhai, aaj nahi!’”

Controversies Surrounding Punjab Kings

Throughout the IPL season, Punjab Kings have stirred the pot with their controversial online behavior. Fans have voiced concerns, deeming their social media activity as toxic. Their commentary, once playful, started attracting criticism, especially following their interactions related to Kolkata Knight Riders. After a rain-affected match where Punjab was leading, they posted a light-hearted video suggesting they were “generously” giving away a point to Kolkata.

However, that seemingly harmless point came back to bite them when it turned out to be pivotal. Ultimately, Punjab finished the season with 15 points, just shy of Rajasthan’s total of 16.

This IPL season has offered a crucial lesson: in a competitive arena like the IPL, not only the game on the field matters, but also how teams conduct themselves off the field.
