Iran Leverages BRICS and Russia to Counter U.S. Sanctions, Experts Caution

Iran Strengthens Ties with Russia and China Amid U.S. Pressure

Tehran is reinforcing its financial and military connections with Beijing and Moscow, which are crucial for it as it tries to evade U.S. sanctions. Experts in regional security expressed concerns about Iran’s strategy on Wednesday, noting it is striving to establish itself as a central player in a framework that counters U.S. influence.

As the U.S. escalates its economic campaign, Iran appears to be aligning more closely with non-Western nations, particularly Russia and China. Analysts suggest Tehran is positioning itself as a key player in efforts that directly challenge American authority.

This development coincides with President Donald Trump’s announcement of what he referred to as the “most crushing economic operation ever” imposed on any nation. He warned of severe repercussions for countries and businesses that support Iran, further intending to isolate the nation.

“This will be a level of Economic Warfare and Isolation like never seen before,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.

Experts stress that Iran is adapting to survive amidst tough U.S. and Israeli military action, as well as political and economic pressures. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior director at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, pointed out that Iran is eager to deepen its relationships with Russia and China, nations that have also faced significant American pressure.

Recent movements suggest that Iranian officials are looking towards new alliances, particularly within the BRICS group—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which focuses on political and economic collaboration.

Abdolnaser Hemmati, Iran’s Central Bank governor, indicated that Tehran intends to join the BRICS-backed New Development Bank to enhance its economic collaboration. While the bank did not immediately confirm Iran’s membership, Hemmati highlighted the importance of these partnerships for Iran’s resilience against U.S. actions.

Analysts believe Iran aims to be more involved in economic systems driven by Russia and China, which are also competitors to U.S. dollar dominance.

In addition to these economic partnerships, reports surfaced that Russia is supplying arms and technology to Iran, which is vital for Tehran to maintain its military capabilities amid American sanctions.

Furthermore, Iran operates within two significant frameworks: the “Axis of Aggressors,” consisting of authoritarian states like Russia and China, and the “Axis of Resistance,” which includes regional groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

Despite the challenges Iran faces, the support from Russia and China remains critical for its political and military strategies during trying times. Analysts argue that, regardless of how well Iran’s economic endeavors pan out, the backing it receives from Moscow and Beijing is substantial and pivotal for its survival.

As these relationships deepen, it could be essential for U.S. policymakers to recognize the growing interconnectedness of these state threats in a rapidly changing global landscape.
