Helicopter Crash in Kenya Claims Seven Lives
Nairobi – A tragic helicopter crash occurred on Wednesday in Samburu county, located north of Nairobi, leading to the deaths of all seven individuals aboard, including six tourists and a pilot, as reported by local authorities.
The incident took place at 9:13 AM local time (06:13 GMT) shortly after the helicopter had taken off from the Loisaba wildlife reserve. Fredrick Kabunge, director of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID), stated that there were no survivors from the crash.
An aviation source, who requested to remain anonymous, also confirmed the unfortunate news, emphasizing, “There are no survivors.” A video shared on social media shows thick black smoke rising into the sky near Mount Ololokwe, where the helicopter went down.
Kabunge noted that the helicopter was engaged in a scenic flight for tourists when the accident happened. Mount Ololokwe is a significant site for the Samburu people, standing at 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) above sea level, and it is a favored location for hikers and sightseeing flights.
Authorities have yet to announce the nationalities of the victims, and the cause of the crash remains unknown, with investigations currently underway by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
The Kenya Red Cross has reported that response operations are ongoing as part of a multi-agency effort to reach the crash site. Afternoon updates included images of the crash area engulfed in flames.
This incident follows a previous helicopter crash in western Kenya in March, which resulted in the loss of six lives, including a member of parliament.
