India and African Union Postpone Summit Amid Health Concerns

India and the African Union have decided to delay the Fourth India–Africa Forum Summit, which was set to take place in New Delhi from May 28 to May 31, 2026.

This decision comes after discussions between Indian officials, the Chairperson of the African Union, and representatives from the African Union Commission. The key reason for postponing the summit is the rising public health issues currently facing parts of Africa.

A joint press release emphasized that both sides acknowledged the need for continued cooperation in enhancing public health readiness across the continent. They highlighted the importance of supporting institutions like the Africa CDC, especially as health challenges grow.

The release indicated that in light of these health concerns, the two parties agreed that holding the summit at a later date would be more beneficial. However, no new date has been announced yet. It was mentioned that the timing of the summit and related meetings will be decided collaboratively and communicated soon.

Both India and Africa reaffirmed their strong partnership, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to advancing peace, development, and prosperity for their people.

Recent Health Warnings

This decision comes shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The situation is being closely monitored, as health workers face challenges in reaching many affected individuals.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that over 130 deaths have been linked to the outbreak, with more than 500 suspected cases reported.

Health Advisory for Travelers

In response to this situation, India’s Union Health Ministry issued an advisory for travelers arriving from, or transiting through, countries affected by Ebola. Passengers are urged to report any symptoms related to the disease immediately to health authorities at the airport.

Travellers coming from high-risk areas like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan are especially advised to seek medical assistance if they experience symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, diarrhea, or any unexplained bleeding.

The advisory stresses the importance of cooperating with health checks and precautions to ensure safety for all passengers and to comply with international health regulations.
