India and Nordic Nations Forge Green Technology Partnership

On Tuesday, India and the Nordic countries announced the formation of a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership, aiming to enhance collaboration on key issues like energy security and digital infrastructure. This initiative was highlighted during the third India-Nordic Summit held in Oslo, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The event underscored the need for strong, trust-based relationships during challenging geopolitical times.

During the summit, leaders discussed how to blend India’s capabilities and resources with the unique strengths of the Nordic nations. They explored potential partnerships in areas such as renewable energy, digitalization, defense, maritime security, and shipping.

The newly established partnership aims to build on existing collaborations India has with Denmark and Norway, focusing on sectors including the blue economy and digital infrastructure. It also seeks to open doors for new initiatives in climate action, energy management, and water conservation.

In his remarks, Modi emphasized that the partnership would link India’s extensive resources with Iceland’s geothermal energy expertise, Norway’s knowledge of the blue economy, and the maritime skills of all Nordic countries. He believes this collective effort can lead to a brighter future globally.

Moreover, the partnership will unite India’s talent with Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defense sectors, as well as Finland’s telecommunications and digital technologies. India’s agreements with the European Free Trade Association, which includes Iceland and Norway, and a proposed free trade deal with the European Union, set the stage for a new phase in economic relations between India and the Nordic nations.

Modi highlighted the importance of advocating for a rules-based global order, especially in light of ongoing global tensions. He reiterated the shared commitment of India and the Nordic countries to support peace initiatives and resolve conflicts, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who hosted the summit after a four-year hiatus, stressed the importance of democratic collaboration in an unpredictable world. The leaders discussed pressing global security and economic issues, as well as the necessity for reforms in international law.

Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized the need for partnerships grounded in trust and shared values, while Denmark’s acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called for deeper cooperation to face the changing dynamics of the world. She pointed out that united Nordic nations can effectively collaborate with significant global powers to promote stability and prosperity.

The summit also highlighted discussions about defending democracy, managing artificial intelligence, and enhancing defense and security measures. Leaders from various countries recognized their common goals and the potential for cooperation to drive innovation and reliable relationships.

The two sides agreed to utilize their trade agreements for fostering stronger commercial, technological, and investment ties, and to initiate joint climate action efforts leveraging Nordic innovation.

Furthermore, they pledged to enhance collaboration in Arctic research, explore joint endeavors in STEM, and promote a peaceful Indo-Pacific region while facilitating mobility for talent, including students and professionals.

In defense partnerships, they discussed allowing 100% foreign direct investment for Nordic defense firms within India’s defense sectors. Despite geographical distances, Modi noted that bilateral trade had quadrupled in the last decade, marking the Nordic countries as vital partners for India.

Before concluding, Modi emphasized the urgent need for reform in multilateral institutions and a united stance against terrorism without any compromises. Following the summit, he departed for Italy, marking the end of his five-nation tour.
