A 19-year-old has been charged after referee John Beaton and his family received threats online, leading to police protection, as reported by the Scottish FA. The organization called for “perspective and tolerance” amid concerns that the situation could escalate. Police Scotland confirmed the teenager is facing charges related to a data protection violation and is set to appear in court soon.

Beaton has faced heavy criticism after he awarded a last-minute penalty during Celtic FC’s thrilling 3-2 win over Motherwell FC, a decision that was confirmed by a VAR review. This incident has further fueled the ongoing discussions about referee decisions as teams compete for the Scottish Premiership title. Celtic’s victory positioned them just one point behind leaders Heart of Midlothian FC ahead of an important match at Celtic Park.

The Scottish FA expressed strong disapproval of any actions that jeopardize the safety of match officials, stating, “Vigilantism stemming from perceived mistakes on the field undermines our national sport.” They thanked Police Scotland for their prompt response to the situation.

As the season reaches a crucial point, the SFA urged fans and commentators to reflect on how their reactions contribute to a tense environment. They noted that personal attacks and blaming referees for losses have heightened the pressure on officials, putting their safety at risk.

According to Police Scotland, the charges stemmed from a report about Beaton’s personal information being shared online. The SFA indicated that increased hostility toward referees throughout the season has created an unhealthy atmosphere, complicating efforts to recruit and retain officials in Scottish football.

The association emphasized that the constant negative scrutiny is damaging the game, and the safety of referees must be taken seriously.
