Switzerland Tops the 2026 Best Country Rankings

Switzerland has once again taken the lead as the best country in the world, according to the latest rankings released by US News & World Report, in collaboration with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

For 2026, the rankings shifted away from expert opinions and instead relied on a thorough analysis of data. Researchers examined 100 countries measured across eight key areas: governance, culture and tourism, civic health, economic development, health, infrastructure, opportunity, and the natural environment. Additionally, 24 subcategories were assessed, including public safety and healthcare.

The top-ranked nations mainly include well-known and some underrated spots in Europe, with the United States and Japan surprisingly absent from the top 10. Senior data editor Evan Comen explained that the US’s varied performances in major categories led to its lower ranking. While it excelled in economic development and culture and tourism, its standing in critical areas like health and infrastructure pulled it down.
