Sindhu and Doubles Pair Shine at BWF Super 500 in Bangkok
In an exciting day at the BWF Super 500 tournament in Bangkok, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, along with the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, both secured their spots in the quarter-finals with impressive victories.
Sindhu continued her winning streak, comfortably defeating Denmark’s Amalie Schulz with scores of 21-13, 21-15 in just 28 minutes. Her swift movements and aggressive play showcased her control throughout the match, following an earlier win against Tung Ciou-Tong from Chinese Taipei.
Ranked 12th in the world, Sindhu is now set to face Japan’s reigning world champion, Akane Yamaguchi. The two have had a close competition in the past, with Sindhu holding a slight edge of 15-13 in their previous encounters.
On the men’s side, the top-seeded duo of Satwik and Chirag also advanced by defeating Malaysia’s Bryan Jeremy Goonting and Muhammad Haikal with a scoreline of 21-12, 21-19. They showcased strong performance in the first game and managed to stay steady in the more challenging second game to secure a straight-game victory.
Having previously won titles here in 2019 and 2024, Satwik and Chirag are the only remaining top seeds and will face Japan’s sixth-seeded pair of Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami in the quarter-finals.
India’s presence remained strong across various categories, with players like Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Malvika Bansod, and Thailand Masters champion Devika Sihag scheduled for matches later in the day.
Srikanth made an impressive start to the tournament, knocking out Singapore’s eighth seed Loh Kean Yew with scores of 21-14, 21-15. Meanwhile, Lakshya, making his return from an injury sustained during the Thomas Cup, defeated Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh 21-16, 21-17.
Devika moved forward in the competition with a win over Japan’s N. Nidaira, while Malvika fought hard against Zhang Wen Yu, battling from a game down to win 13-21, 26-24, 21-13—a notable comeback as she continues to recover from knee surgery.
However, the day ended on a disappointing note for Unnati Hooda, who faced a tough match against China’s world No. 4 Chen Yu Fei. After a valiant effort, Unnati fell short with scores of 21-19, 13-21, 18-21.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the Indian players as they aim for more victories in Bangkok.
