Macron Shuts Down Crowd’s Chatter at Africa Forward Summit

French President Emmanuel Macron faced backlash after interrupting a youth-focused event at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi on Monday. He criticized attendees for talking over speakers, describing the behavior as “a total lack of respect.”

During a session called “Africa Forward: Creation in Motion,” where artists and young entrepreneurs were discussing culture and innovation, Macron took to the stage. He urged the audience to be more respectful and suggested that if they wanted to discuss other topics, they should use separate rooms or step outside.

His remarks quickly drew criticism online. Fadzayi Mahere, a former member of Parliament from Zimbabwe, reacted on social media, questioning Macron’s approach. She expressed that it seemed inappropriate for him to treat attendees like children, stating, “Imagine if a guest of the state did the same in your country. Would it fly? I don’t think so.”

Dr. Miguna Miguna, a Kenyan-Canadian lawyer and political candidate, also weighed in, asserting that Africans don’t need Macron’s permission to speak in Africa.

This incident, part of a summit focused on economic growth and cooperation between Africa and Europe, highlighted the challenges Macron faces in rebranding France’s relationship with African nations. Critics noted a contradiction in his aim to promote equality while making comments that some viewed as patronizing.

Earlier that day, Macron spoke at the University of Nairobi, claiming, “Africa is succeeding” and emphasizing the need for investment to foster self-reliance rather than dependency on aid.

As France seeks to redefine its ties with Africa amidst competition from other global powers, Macron’s comments at the summit serve as a reminder of the sensitivities involved in international relations.
