Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain Stays Positive After Heavy Defeat
In a recent match against the Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) faced a tough loss, getting bowled out for just 86 runs. The team’s captain, Pat Cummins, chose to keep his spirits up, stating, “These things happen in T20 cricket,” despite the team suffering an 82-run defeat in Ahmedabad.
Before the batting disaster, SRH had done a commendable job by limiting Gujarat Titans to 168/7 on a challenging pitch. However, the SRH batting lineup fell apart during the Powerplay. In the post-match interview, Cummins defended his team’s batters while acknowledging the skillful bowling from Gujarat.
“Our batting order has been strong. I don’t think we need to worry too much about today,” Cummins noted. He pointed out that all four of SRH’s top batsmen have scored over 400 runs this season, indicating their overall good form. He added that Gujarat’s bowlers executed their game plan perfectly on a tricky wicket.
The collapse of SRH’s batting was unexpected, especially with the team starting the chase confidently after their bowlers had performed well. Cummins himself bowled impressively, allowing just 20 runs in his four overs, while emerging star Praful Hinge took 2 wickets for 17 runs.
However, once the batting began, things changed quickly. Mohammed Siraj took an important wicket in the first over, dismissing Travis Head. Kagiso Rabada then disrupted SRH’s top order with aggressive seam bowling, leaving them at 32/4 after the Powerplay. With Rabada finishing with figures of 3/28, and Jason Holder and Prasidh Krishna providing further support, SRH struggled to regain control.
Ironically, Cummins was the highest scorer for SRH with 19 runs in a match where none of the other key players could build momentum. Even head coach Daniel Vettori acknowledged the situation, calling it a “bad day at the office.” He expressed confidence that his team would bounce back, as they’ve performed remarkably well throughout the season.
Tough Times for SRH: A Breakdown of the Collapse
The trouble for SRH began right from the start. As Siraj struck out Head, Rabada took charge during the Powerplay with smart bowling. Abhishek Sharma briefly tried to fight back with a six, but soon lost his wicket, leaving SRH in dire straits at 32/4 after just six overs.
The pitch demanded patience, but Hyderabad failed to adapt. Holder’s slower deliveries proved tricky, and both Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy fell while pushing for runs.
By the time SRH reached 60/7, the game was virtually over. Earlier in the evening, the Titans had their own struggles, but solid performances from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar lifted them to a competitive score.
Looking Ahead: Playoff Hopes for Both Teams
Gujarat’s impressive win placed them at the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 16 points, putting them in a strong position for playoff qualification. With two matches left, both against teams also competing for spots, they have a promising outlook.
In contrast, SRH faces added pressure. After winning the toss and performing well with the ball, they had expected to comfortably chase down 169 runs. Now, they must regroup, as they prepare for their final two matches against teams fighting for playoff positions.
As the season continues, both teams have much at stake, and fans will be eager to see how they respond in the coming games.
