Jofra Archer Struggles in Powerplay Against Gujarat Titans

In a challenging match on Saturday, May 9, Jofra Archer, the star bowler for Rajasthan Royals, had a rough start during the powerplay against Gujarat Titans. Playing at their home ground, Rajasthan faced an uphill battle right from the beginning. In his first over, Archer, who has been performing well in the tournament, surprisingly gave away 17 runs.

Fans and commentators were taken aback as Archer, known for his precise bowling, struggled significantly. He ended up bowling four wides and even a no ball, stretching his over to an unusual 11 deliveries.

The first few balls drifted too close to the batter’s legs, as he couldn’t quite master the swing that day. To add to his troubles, the no ball was one of the most noticeable of the season, especially with ongoing discussions about integrity in the league.

After that no ball, Archer bowled three wide balls, one of which rolled to the boundary. He finally wrapped up the over after an eventful 11 balls, allowing a total of 17 runs.

A Record-Breaking Over

With this struggle, Archer tied for the record of the longest over in IPL history, matching others like Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya in this unwanted title. However, this performance was a rare slip-up for Archer. This season, he has claimed 15 wickets in just 10 matches, maintaining a decent economy rate of 8.62 runs per over, showcasing that he has been strong overall in the IPL.

Rajasthan Royals’ bowling coach, Shane Bond, acknowledged that Archer may have been a little out of sync after his recent break. The team hadn’t played a match since May 1, resulting in an 8-day hiatus from competitive cricket.

“He was just having one of those days. He had a couple of days off, and it looked like he was not in the swing of things,” Bond commented.

Playoffs Implications

Currently, both Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans occupy the fourth and fifth spots on the IPL points table. They are tied on points after 10 matches, and the outcome of this game became crucial for both teams as they aim for a top-four finish this season. The match outcome will provide a necessary boost, allowing the victor to step away from the mid-table congestion.

This thrilling match has kept fans on the edge of their seats as the playoffs race heats up in the 2026 IPL season.
