Continued Tensions Between India and Pakistan One Year After Ceasefire
One year after reaching a ceasefire agreement, India and Pakistan are still holding onto their firm positions following a brief but intense military conflict.
Last year, violence erupted in the Kashmir region after a terrorist attack, leading to a series of retaliatory strikes in May that involved both missiles and drones. This escalating conflict caused the deaths of over 50 civilians from both sides.
The fighting came to a halt on May 10, thanks to a ceasefire deal. However, tensions remain high as India has put a hold on a water-sharing agreement concerning the Indus River and its tributaries. This move has raised concerns in Pakistan about potential reductions in water supply.
Additionally, both nations have prohibited each other’s aircraft from flying in their airspace, and trade between them has completely stopped.
An Indian army spokesperson has indicated that military operations are far from over, stating that “this is just the beginning” in India’s ongoing fight against terrorism.
In response, a representative from the Pakistani military reassured that their forces are prepared for any challenges. “We are standing ready,” he said, emphasizing their strong determination and resolve.
