Kim Jong Un Honors Troops’ Sacrifice in Ukraine Conflict

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly praised soldiers who chose to take their own lives over capturing by Ukrainian forces. This acknowledgment came during a memorial event for North Korean troops who perished in the ongoing conflict.

In statements released by state media on Monday, Kim spoke of the bravery of those who “unhesitatingly chose the path of self-destruction.” He shared his respects not only for these soldiers but also for those who fell fighting on the front lines, suggesting this extreme decision reflects their dedication to honor.

This is the first formal recognition from Kim about the troubling tactics being observed among North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces. Reports indicate that approximately 14,000 North Koreans have been sent to support Russia in the Kursk region, where their losses have been significant, with over 6,000 confirmed dead in intense fighting.

For some time, there have been indicators from various sources that North Korean troops were following a deadly policy. Reports showed they were instructed to detonate grenades or take their own lives to avoid capture. For instance, two North Korean soldiers who were captured in Ukraine reportedly tried to blow themselves up but were unsuccessful due to severe injuries.

Kim’s speech seems to elevate these chilling practices to a state-sanctioned ideal, stressing that even those who fail to carry out their duty bear a certain valor. He described these individuals as “loyal warriors and patriots,” emphasizing the intense loyalty North Korean soldiers are expected to show toward their regime.

The situation also highlights the growing military alliance between North Korea and Russia. South Korean intelligence suggests that not only is North Korea sending soldiers, but they are also supplying munitions, receiving economic support and military technology in exchange.

The recent developments showcase a troubling aspect of warfare and the extreme measures that soldiers are compelled to consider in conflicts involving significant political stakes.
