Deepti Sharma Shines in India’s Narrow Victory Over South Africa
In an exciting match on Saturday, Deepti Sharma showcased her all-round talent, leading India to a thrilling 14-run victory against South Africa in the fourth women’s T20I. This marked her first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket, making it a memorable outing for the skilled player.
Entering the match, South Africa held a 3-0 series lead and looked poised to add another win after limiting India to 185 runs for five wickets. However, Deepti played a crucial role, not only scoring a steady 36 runs but also taking five wickets for just 19 runs, helping to restrict South Africa to 171 runs for nine.
The South African innings started strong, with Sune Luus scoring 40 and Tazmine Brits adding 30. They formed a solid partnership, making 54 runs for the second wicket. But when Deepti bowled Luus, South Africa struggled to maintain their scoring momentum.
Earlier, India had a rocky start, losing opener Shafali Verma early and Anushka Sharma soon after. They were at 47 for two at the end of the Power Play, needing to stabilize their innings. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues stepped up, putting together a partnership of 55 runs.
Rodrigues stood out, especially when she hit 24 runs off spinner Nonkhu Mlaba in a single over, including two spectacular sixes. Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived as Rodrigues lost her wicket after being dropped earlier. Harmanpreet also showed promise but fell to a well-placed delivery, leaving India needing a recovery.
Deepti and Richa Ghosh (who scored 34 not out off 18 balls) joined forces, putting together a valuable partnership of 65 runs for the sixth wicket. While they didn’t push aggressively through the innings, they managed to score 56 runs in the last five overs, setting a target that proved challenging for the South African side.
In the end, Deepti’s contributions with both bat and ball were key in helping India notch their first win of the series.
