EU and US Forge Key Minerals Agreement to Reduce Dependence on China

U.S. and EU Join Forces on Critical Minerals Agreement

WASHINGTON: On Friday, the United States and the European Union announced a new agreement aimed at coordinating efforts on vital minerals essential for various industries, including defense. This move comes amid rising concerns over China’s strong influence in the global mining sector.

The new pact is notable as it depicts a shift in the stance of the Trump administration towards the EU, an entity it has often criticized. This partnership focuses on the shared goal of enhancing the production and acquisition of critical minerals.

China has been tightening its grip on the export of essential minerals used in products like semiconductors, electric vehicle batteries, and military systems. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the risks of relying heavily on a limited number of countries for these resources. “The dominance of these minerals by one or two regions poses an unacceptable risk,” he stated while signing the agreement with EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic.

Rubio highlighted the significance of the partnership: “Together, the U.S. and EU represent the largest consumers of these critical minerals. It’s vital to ensure that these resources are accessible and not monopolized.”

Previously, the Trump administration had advocated for creating a preferential trade zone among its allies concerning critical minerals. Additionally, the U.S. has forged agreements with countries like Mexico, Japan, and Australia aimed at strengthening its supply chains for these essential resources.
