Dog Senses Owner’s Cancer Diagnosis: A Heartwarming Journey

Breanna Bortner’s dog, Mochi, displayed a remarkable instinct by fixating on her breast long before she was diagnosed with stage 2B triple-negative breast cancer. This unusual behavior proved to be more than just a coincidence as it marked the beginning of a challenging yet inspiring journey.

In a similar story, Vickie Doogan, 52, from England, faced her own battles with breast cancer. She first discovered a lump and dull pain under her arm when she was just 39 years old. Doctors confirmed it was invasive breast cancer, which had already spread. Vickie underwent a demanding treatment plan, including chemotherapy and surgery, and was eventually declared cancer-free.

However, in 2019, she received heartbreaking news once again. After learning that she carried a BRCA2 gene mutation, which increases breast cancer risk, she decided to undergo a double mastectomy. During her recovery, Vickie welcomed a small poochon named Dolly into her life, who quickly became her loyal companion.

Vickie expressed, “She’s like my shadow. She’s the most perfect little dog.” Dolly provided comfort during Vickie’s toughest times.

In February 2026, Vickie noticed unusual behavior from Dolly. During a routine vet visit, they discovered a lump under her dog’s nipple, leading to a mastectomy for Dolly. Vickie recalled her shock, saying, “I didn’t even know dogs could have mastectomies.” Thankfully, the tumor was low-grade, and Dolly recovered swiftly from the surgery, mirroring her owner’s own healing journey.

“They said it’s like she’s mirroring how I dealt with it,” Vickie noted.

Now, both Vickie and Dolly are cancer-free and are focusing on a brighter future. Vickie hopes their story can inspire others facing similar medical challenges.

“When I was first diagnosed, I was absolutely floored. Chemo was tough, but I responded well,” she shared. “Now I’m living my best life again. I want people to know that although breast cancer is scary, you can still lead a fulfilling life.”
