Stock Market Update – April 20, 2026

The Indian stock markets enjoyed a positive day, buoyed by encouraging global news regarding the easing tensions in the US-Iran conflict. For the fifth consecutive day, the major indices rose, with the Nifty 50 climbing by 156 points to settle at 24,353. Similarly, the BSE Sensex saw a substantial increase, closing up by 504 points at 78,493. The Bank Nifty also showed strong performance, adding 479 points to finish at 56,565.

In sector performance, most areas experienced growth, particularly in FMCG, energy, and metals, while the IT and pharmaceutical sectors saw more subdued movements. The broader market was vibrant, with mid-cap and small-cap indices rising by about 1.5% each, suggesting a strong appetite for risk among investors.

Insights on Nifty Trends

The Gift Nifty index started the day at 24,500, peaking at 24,503 shortly after the market opened. However, it later dipped to an intraday low of 24,408. As of 7:15 AM, it was trading at 24,475, reflecting a gain of 55 points for the day.

Analyst Hariprasad K expects a positive opening for the Indian markets today, predicting levels around 24,400 to 24,450, compared to Friday’s close of 24,353. He cautioned that the current stability is fragile, with markets reacting strongly to geopolitical events.

Global Market Sentiment

Globally, markets showed mixed sentiments. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei bounced back by over 300 points, while South Korea’s Kospi moved up by about 0.5%. However, the situation remains uncertain, heightened by reports of renewed closures in the Strait of Hormuz after a brief reopening, causing crude oil prices to rise and reigniting concerns over supply disruptions.

Gold and Silver Prices

Gold and silver prices saw a decline of up to 2.5% today, as reports of attacks in the Strait of Hormuz raised fears about energy supply disruptions. Currently, the COMEX gold rate has fallen by 2% to $4,780 per ounce, while silver has decreased by 2.5% to $78.75 per ounce.

Since the start of the US-Iran conflict in late February, gold prices have dropped about 9% and silver prices about 14%.

Crude Oil Prices Surge

Crude oil prices spiked today due to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, which restricted shipping through the Gulf. Brent crude oil surged by 6.10% to $95.89 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures increased by 7.49% to $90.13 a barrel.

Earnings Reports Impact

On a domestic front, earnings reports from major institutions like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, released over the weekend, are expected to provide some stability to the market. Both banks posted solid profit growth, which might help cushion the market against global volatility.

Market Outlook

Expectations for today point toward potential volatility within the markets. Traders should remain vigilant, especially if crude oil prices continue to rise.

FII and DII Trends

On Friday, foreign institutional investors were net buyers, purchasing shares worth ₹683.20 crore, while domestic institutional investors were net sellers, offloading shares valued at ₹4,721.48 crore.

Trading Recommendations

Experts suggest keeping a cautious but positive approach. For investors looking to make moves today, recommended stocks for intraday trading include:

  • Sumitomo Chemical: Buy at ₹442, with a target of ₹474
  • Cummins India: Buy at ₹5,141, target of ₹5,503
