Embracing ‘Nonnamaxxing’: The New Trend of Slow Living for Mental Wellness

Rediscovering Simplicity: The Nonnamaxxing Trend

In today’s fast-paced world, a new trend is encouraging people to slow down and embrace a simpler way of living, inspired by the habits of our grandparents. This movement, called “nonnamaxxing,” reflects a lifestyle that values connection, home-cooked meals, and the great outdoors.

Nonnamaxxing draws its name from the Italian word for grandmother, “Nonna.” According to Erin Palinski-Wade, a registered dietitian from New Jersey, this trend promotes activities such as cooking from scratch, enjoying long family meals, taking daily walks, and reducing time spent on screens.

Laurie Singer, a psychotherapist from California, notes that spending time in person with others significantly boosts mental health, contrasting that with the often negative effects of social media. This trend isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s also about improved nutrition and quality of life. Cooking at home has been shown to encourage healthier eating and foster more mindful habits, especially when meals are shared.

Engaging in hands-on activities can also reduce anxiety. Focusing on tasks like gardening or baking helps us stay grounded, Singer explains.

While embracing this trend, it’s important to remember that the aim is not to recreate your grandmother’s lifestyle exactly, but rather to capture the essence of intentional living.

To adopt this lifestyle, consider making small changes such as having a few family meals each week, going for phone-free walks, or dedicating time to enjoyable hobbies. As Singer puts it, finding joy in our activities is a universal human experience, not just a generational one.

Reconnecting with simpler, meaningful moments can lead to a happier and healthier life.
