Brazil’s President Criticizes Trump’s Threats to Other Nations

In a recent interview with a Spanish newspaper, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva strongly criticized US President Donald Trump, arguing that he has “no right” to threaten other countries. Lula’s remarks come after Trump warned that a “whole civilization will die” in Iran if the nation does not allow access to the Strait of Hormuz.

“Trump has no right to wake up in the morning and threaten a country,” Lula stated, emphasizing that the US Constitution divides powers related to war and foreign policy between Congress and the president. He believes it is crucial for powerful leaders to take more responsibility in fostering peace around the world.

In addition to his comments on Trump, Lula called for significant reforms to the UN Security Council. He suggested that the veto power held by the five permanent members should be removed, and that more nations from Africa and Latin America should be included in decision-making processes.

“It’s time to redefine the United Nations to give it credibility; otherwise, Trump is right,” he added, reflecting on the US president’s critique that the current international system established after World War II is outdated.

Lula made these statements ahead of his visit to Spain, where he is set to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and participate in a forum of progressive leaders.
