UK Finance Chief Critiques Trump’s Misguided Approach to Iran Conflict

LONDON: British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to engage in conflict with Iran, describing it as a “foolish” move made without a clear plan for withdrawal.

As she prepares to travel to Washington for an International Monetary Fund meeting on the economic repercussions of the war, Reeves shared her concerns with the Daily Mirror. She joined other British officials, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in voicing frustration over the situation unfolding in the Middle East involving a key ally.

“This war is one we did not initiate and certainly do not support,” Reeves stated. With the UK’s economy facing challenges, she expressed her anger and disappointment over the US’s lack of direction in the conflict.

The conflict, which erupted on February 28 with military actions from the US and Israel, has created turmoil in global markets and impacted the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas shipments. This disruption has contributed to rising energy prices, complicating the UK government’s efforts to tackle inflation and reduce borrowing costs.

“While no reasonable person supports the Iranian regime, starting a war without clear goals and no exit strategy is unwise,” Reeves emphasized. She believes this decision has repercussions not only for families in the UK but also for those in the US and worldwide.
