Russian Ambassador Optimistic About India-Russia Ties

Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov has expressed a hopeful outlook regarding the strong partnership between India and Russia. He anticipates upcoming high-level visits and increased collaboration in areas like energy and defense.

In a recent conversation, Alipov noted that Russia expects President Vladimir Putin to attend the BRICS Summit in India, scheduled for September 2026. “We look forward to President Putin’s presence at the summit,” he stated, emphasizing the close relationship between the two nations. The theme of India’s BRICS chairship, focusing on resilience and sustainability, offers a platform to discuss important global issues such as governance reforms and counter-terrorism.

The Ambassador also recalled President Putin’s visit to India last year and expressed excitement about welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russia this year. “We’re eager to host him, and discussions are underway to finalize the date,” he mentioned, highlighting the significance of the annual summit mechanism that helps maintain strong bilateral ties.

When asked about the future of the relationship, Alipov described it as a “special and privileged strategic partnership.” He pointed out that last year marked a milestone, celebrating 25 years of this relationship, and is characterized by efforts in economic development, political coordination, and cultural ties. “Both nations value this relationship highly, and we have a clear vision for its future,” he added.

The recent high-level meetings between Indian and Russian officials touched on vital topics such as fertilizers, energy, and agriculture. Alipov noted that First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov visited India for discussions with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, leading to fruitful dialogues on cooperation in multiple sectors.

Regarding energy, Alipov highlighted the steady increase in Russian oil supplies to India with no plans to decrease commitment despite geopolitical challenges. He reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to meet India’s energy needs, including LPG supplies, emphasizing that barriers created by Western sanctions are not a concern for their trade.

He also shared Russia’s position on the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has seen a ceasefire. The Ambassador expressed the need for a comprehensive and lasting resolution, calling for negotiations and acknowledging the regional instability’s global implications for energy markets.

Turning to defense cooperation, Alipov mentioned that Russia is set to fulfill its remaining commitments for delivering S-400 systems. He stated that discussions about various military equipment are ongoing but remained careful not to disclose sensitive details.

In terms of economic collaboration, Alipov is optimistic about achieving the target of $100 billion in bilateral trade. Discussions aimed at boosting Indian exports to Russia in diverse sectors, from machinery to agricultural products, are key to reaching this goal.

On currency trade, he revealed that 95% of transactions between the two countries are now conducted in national currencies, indicating progress in overcoming obstacles created by external pressures.

As India prepares for its presidency of the BRICS grouping, Alipov assured that Russia fully supports India’s leadership role. He noted the potential for successful discussions on various proposals during the upcoming summit.

Overall, Ambassador Denis Alipov’s comments reflect a committed and forward-looking partnership between India and Russia, underpinned by cooperation across multiple sectors.
