Region Faces Tensions Amid Ongoing Conflicts
DUBAI/BEIRUT/JERUSALEM/ISLAMABAD: The Strait of Hormuz is still closed, and on Friday, Israel intensified its attacks on Lebanon, actions condemned by both the United States and Iran as breaches of a new ceasefire agreement just before important peace talks set to begin this weekend.
Leading the U.S. delegation, Vice President JD Vance departed for the talks in Pakistan, expressing hope for a positive outcome but cautioning that any attempts at deception would not be well-received.
The newly established two-day ceasefire has brought an end to U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran; however, the blockade of the strait continues, leading to significant disruptions in global energy supplies. Meanwhile, Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, Iran’s ally in Lebanon, remains unresolved.
In a statement on social media, President Donald Trump criticized Iran for not efficiently allowing oil to flow through the strait, warning them against imposing fees on crossing ships, stating this went against their agreement.
Security Measures in Pakistan
Iran has condemned the latest Israeli assaults on Lebanon, claiming they violate the truce. Just hours after the ceasefire was announced, Israeli strikes killed over 250 Lebanese individuals in surprise attacks on densely populated areas, with further strikes reported on Friday claiming more lives, including members of Lebanese security forces.
Iran asserts that this truce should include Lebanon, a position initially backed by Pakistan, which helped mediate the agreement. In contrast, the U.S. and Israel maintain that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire deal. Recently, Israel announced separate discussions with the Lebanese government to work toward ending hostilities and disarming Hezbollah.
Despite ongoing violence, a Pakistani source indicated that preparations for the U.S.-Iran peace talks starting on Saturday are proceeding smoothly, noting a positive trend in de-escalating tensions.
Lockdown in the Capital
Central Islamabad has been placed under strict lockdown ahead of the talks, with an area around the five-star Serena hotel designated as a “red zone.” Security is heightened as both delegations prepare to meet, although no direct meetings are scheduled for Friday; messages will be exchanged through intermediaries.
Economic Impact of the Conflict
The ongoing war has significantly influenced inflation rates, pushing U.S. inflation to its highest level in nearly four years. The energy supply disruptions have contributed to rising prices, with the latest data showing a 0.9% increase in March – the steepest rise since mid-2022, which impacted President Biden’s administration.
While Iran’s ships are navigating the strait without interference, vessels from other countries remain stranded. Notably, an Iranian supertanker carrying 2 million barrels of crude made it through, but typically around 140 ships would cross daily, carrying a total of 20 million barrels before the conflict began.
