Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Gulshan Grover, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, Jamie Lever, and Girish Kulkarni recently gathered in Mumbai for the trailer launch of their new web series, Matka King. The event also saw the presence of director Nagraj Manjule and producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
Gulshan Grover, known for his captivating presence, shared some memorable experiences from the show. He mentioned how intrigued Bollywood stars like Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, and Varun Dhawan were when they learned about the series’ title.
Grover recounted a fun incident during filming, saying, “I usually don’t follow anyone’s lead, but this director really impressed me. During one scene set in a government office, I thought I should dress in my best clothes. I convinced the costume team to let me wear something else, thinking I would look like Al Pacino.”
However, when Nagraj Manjule saw him, he suggested he stick to his original outfit. Grover respected that and humorously shared, “I changed back into my old clothes right in front of the whole crew. That’s how much I respect his vision.”
Later at the event, Grover shared how conversations about Matka King had sparked interest. He had dinner with notable personalities like Shatrughan Sinha and Rakesh Roshan, where the topic of the show came up. Everyone was curious about the title and who was directing. When he mentioned Nagraj Manjule, the audience quickly recognized his talent, even correcting Grover on the name of one of Manjule’s films.
Grover also recounted his conversation with Akshay Kumar, who expressed interest in the new series, emphasizing how intriguing the title was. He reflected, “The title draws you into a fascinating world.”
Matka King is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 17.
