The Indian community in Houston came together to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day on Saturday, hosted by the local consulate. The event featured a flag-hoisting ceremony, cultural performances, and an exhibition, attracting a significant number of attendees. Many participants expressed that such celebrations strengthened their connection to India, even while living so far from their homeland.

The ceremony kicked off with Consul General D.C. Manjunath raising the Indian tricolor and reading President Droupadi Murmu’s message to the nation. He appreciated the attendees for their loyal support towards India and encouraged them to actively participate in achieving the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ or Developed India.

Taking place at the consulate premises, the celebration began with the singing of the national song, followed by the tricolor’s unfurling amidst a cascade of flower petals and a collective singing of the national anthem. Despite the warm weather, many members of the Indian diaspora turned out to show their patriotism. The event also included heartfelt performances of patriotic songs, an exhibition featuring paintings themed around ‘Viksit Bharat’, and the recognition of winners from the ‘Bharat Ko Janiye’ Quiz competition.

A group of notable officials and community leaders also attended, sharing proclamations and best wishes. Among the distinguished guests were Renu Khator, Chancellor of the University of Houston; Daniel Wong, Fort Bend County Judge; Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones; and Fort Bend Commissioners Dexter McCoy and Andy Myers.

Following the official program at the consulate, Manjunath joined community leaders at the O.P. Jindal Centre at India House Houston. Here, another flag-hoisting ceremony took place, featuring the Indian tricolor, the American flag, the Texas state flag, and the India House banner. The day concluded with patriotic songs, cultural displays, speeches from community members, and a reception, marking a joyful and united celebration of India’s Independence Day among the Indian-American community in Houston.
