Harry Maguire Signs New One-Year Deal with Manchester United
Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with the club, with an option to extend for another year. The 33-year-old defender’s previous contract was set to end at the close of this season.
Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for a record fee of £80 million, making him the world’s most expensive defender at the time. Since then, he has made 266 appearances for the team and contributed to their victories in the League Cup for the 2022-23 season and the FA Cup the following year.
“Playing for Manchester United is a huge honor. It makes me and my family proud every day,” said Maguire. “I’m thrilled to continue my journey with this amazing club for at least eight seasons and look forward to creating more unforgettable moments with our wonderful fans.”
Maguire’s time at United has had its ups and downs. Just five months after joining, he was made captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and remained a key player despite facing criticism during his time under Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
In April 2022, Cheshire Police even searched his home following a bomb threat. His role at the club waned under Erik ten Hag, who removed him from the captaincy in July 2023. Although he had an agreement to transfer to West Ham United soon after, Maguire chose to stay with Manchester United.
While his chances to play were limited under Ruben Amorim, Maguire has found new life under interim manager Michael Carrick, starting every match since Carrick took over in January.
“You can really feel the ambition and potential in this exciting squad. The drive throughout the club to compete for major trophies is evident, and I believe our best moments are still ahead,” Maguire shared.
Football Director Jason Wilcox added, “Harry embodies the resilience and mentality needed to succeed at Manchester United. He is a consummate professional who brings invaluable leadership and experience to our young, ambitious team.”
