Ukrainian President Sounds Alarm on Russian Surveillance of U.S. Military Sites
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised serious concerns about Russian reconnaissance satellites capturing images of crucial U.S. and allied military facilities in the Middle East. This warning follows his recent trip to Gulf countries that are currently facing Iranian attacks.
Zelenskyy stated that these satellite images were taken to support Iran’s military actions, including possible missile and drone strikes. He shared this information in a post on social media, emphasizing that repeated surveillance suggests preparations for attacks.
The surveillance reportedly spanned several days in late March. On March 24, Russian satellites documented military bases, including a U.S.-U.K. facility on Diego Garcia and locations in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. These areas have been the focus of recent Iranian strikes, although it remains unclear if the satellite imagery directly influenced those operations.
Zelenskyy’s comments align with Ukraine’s increasing engagement in the region, where it is offering intelligence and defense support to partners grappling with Iranian threats.
In a recent interview, Zelenskyy remarked that Ukraine has been sharing information about Russian aid to Iran, reinforcing his belief that Russia is actively assisting Tehran’s military efforts.
Experts like Ksenia Svetlova from Chatham House have noted a rising intelligence cooperation between Russia and Iran. She suggested that this collaboration allows Russia to help Iran without deploying troops.
The White House has not confirmed Zelenskyy’s claims but reported that U.S. military operations remain unaffected. Officials highlighted the extensive efforts against Iranian-targeted attacks, noting that military action has significantly reduced Iran’s missile operations.
Former U.S. military leader Lt. Gen. Richard Newton stated that the situation should not surprise anyone, urging caution in relations with Moscow while also stressing the need for accountability for Russia’s actions.
Zelenskyy has also criticized discussions about lifting sanctions on Russia, insisting that pressure must be maintained on the aggressor.
The geopolitical landscape continues to shift, and the implications of this surveillance highlight ongoing tensions.
