IPL 2026: Matthew Hayden Praises Shubman Gill’s Growth as a Batter and Leader for GT

Matthew Hayden Praises Shubman Gill’s Growth Ahead of IPL Season

Gujarat Titans’ batting coach, Matthew Hayden, has highlighted the impressive development of captain Shubman Gill, both as a player and a leader. Ahead of their opening match against Punjab Kings on Tuesday, Hayden shared insights into Gill’s clarity of thought and modern confidence, which he believes are key to his success in high-pressure situations.

Hayden commended Gill’s deep understanding of the game and his ability to communicate effectively, noting that these attributes showcase a player who has matured in the sport. “Shubman is articulate about the game and shows that he understands cricket at its core,” Hayden explained.

The former Australian cricketer also pointed out Gill’s confidence and contemporary approach, which he sees as crucial qualities for leadership. “He brings a strong sense of self-assurance and a modern flair to the game,” said Hayden. “It’s clear that he feels in control and is actively shaping his own future.”

However, Gill finds himself at a unique point in his T20 career. Though he has been a reliable performer in more extended formats for India, he recently stepped back from the national T20I roster, facing tough competition from aggressive players like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. After participating in 15 T20 internationals since IPL 2025, Gill struggled to score half-centuries, leading to speculation about his spot in the shorter format.

As the Titans look towards the season, they will depend on Gill to regain his form and lead the team effectively. Hayden remains confident in the batting lineup, asserting that there are no significant concerns as they embark on the new season. “Last season, there were no apparent weaknesses. The top order laid a fantastic foundation with strong contributions from the middle order, and we had solid finishes,” he remarked.

With a solid team dynamic and a captain known for his clarity and strong character, the Gujarat Titans hope to see Gill transform potential into on-field success as the IPL season gets underway.
