Noelia Castillo Ramos Passes Away After Euthanasia Decision
Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old from Barcelona, has died after undergoing euthanasia at the Sant Camil hospital in Sant Pere de Ribes. Her decision came after a prolonged legal struggle that lasted more than a year.
Her case attracted significant attention when Noelia’s father, Gerónimo Castillo, challenged her choice in various Spanish courts. With support from Abogados Cristianos, a conservative legal group, he argued that his daughter was not mentally capable of making such a decision and that she deserved better psychiatric care. However, his appeals were rejected, culminating in a decision from the European Court of Human Rights in March.
This situation has sparked strong emotions across Spain, with many questioning the appropriateness of the euthanasia laws. Noelia faced severe challenges throughout her life, including a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, traumatic experiences, and multiple suicide attempts.
She shared her struggles in a televised interview, revealing the deep pain she felt from past traumas, including sexual assaults. These events contributed to her deteriorating mental health, and she sought to end her suffering through euthanasia, which became legally available in Spain in 2021.
Despite offers from various individuals to fund her treatment if she chose to delay the procedure, Noelia ultimately went ahead with her decision. Officials confirmed that all necessary legal and medical criteria were met for her request.
Noelia died on Thursday at 6 p.m., marking her as the youngest person to undergo euthanasia under Spain’s assisted dying law. Her case has ignited debate over mental health care and euthanasia policies in the country, prompting calls for reassessment and reform in how such issues are handled.
