Incident involving university student raises concerns about British policing

British police are under increasing scrutiny following a tragic incident where an 18-year-old university student, Henry Nowak, died after being stabbed. Reports indicate that officers handcuffed him during the chaos, mistakenly believing him to be the attacker after receiving a false claim from the real assailant, who alleged racial abuse.

This incident has ignited widespread outrage in the UK, sparking discussions about the policing approach and renewed calls for the release of body camera footage from the incident. Alan Mendoza, the executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, argued that this case illustrates deeper issues within British policing, stating that the assumptions made based on race led to a serious failure in the response.

Vikram Digwa, 23, has been convicted of stabbing Nowak multiple times with a ceremonial knife. The incident occurred on December 3, 2025, during what was described as a confrontation. Initially, when police arrived, they treated Nowak as the suspect and focused on Digwa’s claims before realizing the gravity of Nowak’s injuries. Despite attempts to save him, he died at the scene.

After the verdict, Hampshire Constabulary publicly apologized and referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for further investigation. Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Robert France expressed regret for the mishandling of the situation, highlighting the tragic circumstances surrounding Nowak’s death.

Prosecutors revealed that Digwa had claimed he was acting in self-defense after being racially insulted. However, the jury dismissed this defense and found him guilty of murder. The incident has led to significant public debate about whether the police prioritized allegations of racism over their basic protocols and responsibilities.

Following the conviction, MP Robert Jenrick called for transparency, urging for the release of police footage if the family consents. His comments underscored a belief that officers did not prioritize saving Nowak’s life due to the false allegations.

The political response has been criticized as muted compared to reactions witnessed after high-profile cases abroad. Additionally, the Sikh community has expressed concern regarding how this event may impact their community, emphasizing that the actions of the assailant do not reflect Sikhism or its teachings.

Organizations representing the Sikh community condemned the murder and distanced themselves from Digwa’s actions, reminding the public that the legal right to carry ceremonial kirpans does not apply in cases of violent use. They expressed their solidarity with Nowak’s family and condemned the police’s handling of the situation.

As investigations continue, many are left questioning the adequacy of police response and procedures in critical emergency situations, hoping for accountability and reflection on these tragic events.
