Kolkata Knight Riders Captain Ajinkya Rahane Injured in IPL 2026 Opener Against Mumbai Indians

In a challenging start to the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane had to leave the field due to an injury during the match against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on March 29.

Rahane was seen clutching his foot shortly before the fifth over of Mumbai’s innings. After being examined by the team’s physiotherapists, he left the field cautiously, raising immediate concerns for KKR at a crucial point in the game.

During Rahane’s absence, vice-captain Rinku Singh took over the role of on-field captain. Before the injury, Rahane had performed impressively with the bat, scoring 67 runs off 40 balls. His innings included three fours and five sixes, helping KKR post a strong total of 220 for 4 in 20 overs.

Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi also contributed significantly, scoring a steady 51 runs, while Finn Allen added a quick 37 off just 17 balls. Together, they helped KKR maintain a high scoring rate throughout their innings.

On the bowling side, the Mumbai Indians struggled to contain KKR’s batsmen for most of the match. Despite this, Shardul Thakur stood out with impressive figures of 3 for 39. He managed to break KKR’s momentum at critical moments.

Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, Mumbai’s senior bowlers, were unable to take any wickets but managed to keep the runs in check towards the end of KKR’s innings.

Rahane started the match aggressively, hitting a six off Boult in the first over. He and Allen quickly built momentum, taking KKR to 78 for 1 by the end of the powerplay and surpassing 100 runs within the first eight overs. At one point, Rahane’s strike rate soared above 200, making it seem like he would reach a century.

However, Thakur’s crucial wickets halted KKR’s progress. He first dismissed Allen and later trapped Rahane with a clever slower delivery that was caught by Hardik Pandya.

As the match unfolded, KKR’s early strength and Rahane’s earlier brilliance provided a thrilling backdrop, though his injury will certainly be a concern for his team going forward.
