Ashwin Speaks on Dhoni’s Future with Chennai Super Kings
As the excitement builds for the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his views on the ongoing debate about MS Dhoni’s role with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Ashwin firmly believes that if Dhoni is on the team, he should be in the starting lineup, rather than being used as an Impact Player.
Discussions around Dhoni’s future have intensified, raising questions about whether he should continue as a full-time player or take on a different, limited role. Ashwin made it clear that he does not support the idea of Dhoni being an Impact Sub. “If he is in the squad, he should play. If not, then he should consider not playing at all,” Ashwin expressed during his YouTube show, “Ash ki Baat.”
He emphasized that Dhoni’s experience should end the debate regarding his place in the eleven. Ashwin highlighted that Dhoni has been practicing diligently for three months, signaling his commitment to play. “If he believes he can contribute, there’s no way to say he should sit out,” he added.
While acknowledging that Dhoni may not score like he used to, Ashwin pointed out that he can still serve vital roles, especially as a wicketkeeper and mentor to the current captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. “Although he might not be the number six batter anymore, he can guide Ruturaj on the field,” Ashwin noted.
He also mentioned Dhoni’s skills in managing the bowling team and his ability to read the game from behind the stumps, roles he has mastered during his time with CSK. “With a stronger batting lineup this season, Dhoni might not need to come in early and can focus on being a finisher,” Ashwin explained.
Ashwin feels that a balanced team will allow Dhoni to focus on key responsibilities like field setting and supporting his teammates. “He can be the guiding figure in the team,” he said.
Overall, Ashwin’s comments reflect a strong belief that Dhoni’s preparation and dedication make him an essential part of the squad. “We’ve all seen him practicing, which shows he’s serious about contributing this season,” he added.
Similarly, former cricketer Aakash Chopra has questioned the idea of using Dhoni merely as an Impact Player, suggesting that a player of his caliber should fully participate or step back from the sport altogether.
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, fans will be watching closely to see how Dhoni fits into the team dynamic with Chennai Super Kings.
