Icelandic Father Claims Custody Battle Lost Over Opposition to Son’s Transition

Father Fights for Parental Rights Amid Controversial Court Decision

In Iceland, a father named Alexandre Rocha is grappling with the loss of his parental rights after raising concerns about his autistic son’s transition. The case has sparked significant attention globally, including from notable figures like Elon Musk. Rocha believes that the court favored progressive views over his right to safeguard his child.

Rocha, who is originally from France and has lived in Iceland for 25 years, lost custody to his son’s mother last December. He claims that his questioning of puberty blockers and hormone treatments influenced the judge’s decision. “This shouldn’t happen,” he stated, expressing his belief that these medical procedures are harmful to children who may not understand the long-term effects.

Rocha pointed out that his son, who is only 11, is influenced largely by the games he plays, such as Minecraft and Roblox. He feels his son cannot grasp the lasting implications of such a decision at such a young age. “Naturally, kids face challenges, especially with an autism diagnosis,” Rocha explained, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding his son’s happiness in the future after undergoing medical treatments.

Since his son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder eight months ago, Rocha feels that this diagnosis was minimized during the court proceedings. He noted that children on the autism spectrum often experience feelings of identity confusion, sometimes wanting to be someone or something else entirely.

Despite these concerns, Rocha claims that medical professionals dismissed his views during the trial, insisting that hormone treatments would not pose any issues. Now excluded from any medical decision-making, Rocha worries about what his son might be undergoing without his approval.

Adding to his distress, the child’s mother appears to advocate strongly for the transition, leading Rocha to unfamiliarity with related terms such as “deadname.” He expressed deep concern about the implications of his child’s name change to a female identity and the subsequent adjustment of his legal documents.

Rocha’s case has resonated widely, catching Musk’s attention, who has spoken out on transgender issues, particularly in relation to his own child’s experience. Musk has described feeling inadequate when navigating consent for hormone treatments for his son.

Rocha, acknowledging the challenges he faces, shared that he deeply misses every moment spent with his son, from reading bedtime stories to cooking together. He has also moved to request fines against his ex-wife for preventing him from seeing his son, a claim she denies, stating that the child refuses to visit because Rocha does not accept the transition.

In light of these difficulties, Rocha urges other parents to trust their instincts and speak out on matters concerning their children. “I am here for my kid and his future,” he affirmed, underscoring his commitment to fighting for his son’s well-being.

The child’s mother has not yet commented on the situation. The battle between parental rights and medical decisions remains a complex and emotional topic as Rocha seeks to navigate the turbulent waters of family law and child welfare.
