British Submarine Deployed to Arabian Sea Amid Rising Tensions
A British nuclear submarine, HMS Anson, has recently been sent to the Arabian Sea as tensions escalate in the region. This move coincides with Iran’s unsuccessful attempt to target Diego Garcia, a significant U.S.-U.K. military base in the Indian Ocean.
HMS Anson, part of the Royal Navy’s Astute-class, is equipped with advanced Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles and Spearfish torpedoes. It covered approximately 5,500 miles to reach its current location in the northern Arabian Sea, emphasizing Britain’s readiness to address any potential conflicts swiftly.
The submarine maintains communication with the U.K.’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in London by periodically surfacing, according to reports.
Shortly after the U.K. authorized the U.S. to utilize its military bases for defensive operations against Iranian missile threats, this deployment took place. The operation’s goal is to reduce Iran’s missile capabilities that have posed risks to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. A Downing Street statement highlighted the intention to “degrade the missile sites and capabilities” used in attacks against maritime vessels, while also underscoring that Britain seeks to avoid being dragged into a broader regional war.
Concerns intensified after Iran launched two ballistic missiles towards Diego Garcia. Fortunately, neither missile hit its target: one reportedly failed in flight, and the other was intercepted.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has expressed strong disapproval of Britain’s support for U.S. military actions, warning that such involvement could escalate conflicts further. He conveyed that Iran views Britain’s decision to allow U.S. access to its bases as “participation in aggression.”
Despite the rising tensions, the U.K. did not allow U.S. troops to execute initial offensive strikes against Iran but has agreed to assist in defensive operations concerning Iranian missile threats.
The U.K. Ministry of Defence stated that Royal Air Force assets, including Typhoon jets, remain engaged in defensive operations in the region. British forces have also been involved in countering Iranian drone threats while working closely with allies.
