Women Leaders from the Indian Diaspora Unite for Empowerment

Women leaders from around the world gathered for an important online discussion focused on leadership, identity, and empowerment. This event took place during a webinar hosted by the Women’s Council Wing of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) and highlighted both achievements and ongoing challenges faced by women today.

Notably, the event featured descendants of two iconic leaders, Mahatma Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose, sharing a platform for the first time.

Held on March 14, the webinar connected participants from various countries such as South Africa, Germany, India, Mauritius, the UK, the Caribbean, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The conversation centered on how women in the diaspora play a crucial role in shaping different sectors, from education to corporate leadership.

GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham kicked off the event, emphasizing the organization’s global efforts in advocating for issues like dual nationality. GOPIO President Prakash Shah shared exciting plans for future initiatives, including monthly webinars and a significant convention set to occur in Mumbai in December 2026.

Charu Shivakumar, Chair of the Women’s Council, explained the council’s mission: to empower diaspora women through networking, education, and leadership growth. The discussion was skillfully guided by Dr. Neeraja Arun Gupta, who encouraged participants to focus on mutual growth and contribution.

The panel included prominent figures such as Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, and Anita Bose-Pfaff, daughter of Subhas Chandra Bose. Gandhi spoke passionately about her political experiences in South Africa and the ongoing challenge of women’s representation. She highlighted the struggle many women face in juggling professional and home responsibilities and called for a shift toward shared responsibilities within society.

Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox, a senator from Connecticut, talked about the obstacles women, especially those from diverse backgrounds, encounter in politics. She stressed the importance of grassroots movements to combat structural issues like pay inequality.

Bose-Pfaff shared her experiences with cultural identity in Europe and noted that, despite progress in education, significant professional challenges still exist. She referred to historical examples of women’s leadership from India’s fight for independence to inspire current generations.

Dr. Aarti Shah discussed the significance of values, education, and service in corporate leadership, while Vice Chancellor Dr. Neerja Gupta addressed the persistent barriers women face in leadership roles, emphasizing the need for ongoing efforts toward equality.

Ruchika Arora, who participated in pageantry and women’s initiatives, spoke about her journey and the importance of building confidence and networking on a global scale.

This engaging session highlighted both the accomplishments of diaspora women and the ongoing work needed to ensure their voices are heard and valued in all areas of society.
