Trump Administration Readies Sanctions Targeting International Criminal Court, Sources Reveal

Washington: New Sanctions Against the International Criminal Court Expected from Trump Administration

The Trump administration is preparing to impose sanctions on the entire International Criminal Court (ICC), according to sources familiar with the issue. This development signals a continued effort by the U.S. government to challenge the global tribunal, which holds the power to investigate and prosecute war crimes and genocides.

The administration has previously expressed strong disapproval of the ICC, particularly in regards to its investigation into American military actions in Afghanistan and its arrest warrants against certain Israeli leaders. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio even launched a campaign earlier this year to encourage other nations to distance themselves from the court.

In the past, the U.S. has already sanctioned several ICC judges and prosecutors. However, a direct move against the court itself was seen as a possibility but had not yet been executed. Sources suggest that the announcement about these sanctions could arrive soon, potentially aligning with the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting.

If implemented, the sanctions would hinder various aspects of the ICC’s operations. They would limit U.S. citizens and businesses from engaging financially with the court, which could disrupt critical functions such as hiring necessary staff, acquiring technology services, and covering day-to-day operational costs.

The push against the ICC reflects Trump’s long-standing opposition to the tribunal, which he revisited during his second term when the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for alleged war crimes related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Established in 2002, the ICC aims to address grave crimes like war crimes and genocide when individual countries are unwilling or unable to do so. Notably, the United States has never been a member of the ICC.
