Indian Oil Refineries Face Tough Choices Over Russian Crude Imports
Indian oil refiners are having to make a tough decision regarding their purchases of Russian crude oil. This comes amid new U.S. sanctions that could lead to hefty penalties for countries buying Russian energy products.
Reports suggest that Indian refiners might cut back on their imports of Russian oil for November deliveries due to the recent U.S. sanctions law, which gives the possibility of imposing additional tariffs on such purchases.
As the world’s third-largest oil importer, India has been relying heavily on Russian crude, which accounted for more than half of its total oil imports in recent months. This strategy has helped India cope with rising prices and supply disruptions from the Middle East. However, the country’s major refiners are now exploring options for alternative suppliers.
Sources indicate that the volume of Russian crude in India’s imports might dip to between 20% to 30% in the near future. If this happens, India would lose its status as the world’s largest buyer of Russian oil transported by sea. Nevertheless, India plans to maintain its discussions with Washington.
In September, estimates from analytics firm Kpler suggested that average Russian oil shipments to India reached approximately 1.9 million barrels per day, representing more than 35% of the nation’s total oil imports. This is a notable decline, marking the lowest level since April.
Challenges in Finding Alternatives to Russian Oil
Replacing Russian oil entirely is proving to be a challenge due to the sheer volume needed and the higher costs of alternative sources. As of last week, the price for Urals crude was around $133 per barrel for Indian buyers, while Middle Eastern crudes like Oman and Murban were several dollars more expensive.
India’s demand for oil is expected to rise, particularly with the upcoming launch of a new refinery in Rajasthan and the expansion of existing facilities. This could see daily imports hitting a record high of 5.4 million barrels.
Risks Associated with New Sanctions on Russian Energy
The new U.S. law allows the Trump administration to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries purchasing Russian energy products within 30 days. Indian authorities are keeping a close eye on how these sanctions might affect other major buyers, especially China.
India has already started to adjust its Russian oil purchases due to pressure from the U.S., but officials stress that their primary focus remains on providing affordable energy to the nation’s approximately 1.4 billion citizens.
This new legislation, aimed at tightening sanctions on Russia, was signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham.
