Belgium Mobilizes Troops to Safeguard Jewish Communities Following Synagogue Assault

Belgium Boosts Security for Jewish Community After Synagogue Attack

Belgium is stepping up security measures for its Jewish community following a recent attack on a synagogue that has raised concerns across Europe. A new terrorist group claiming connections to Iran has taken responsibility for multiple attacks on Jewish sites throughout the continent.

The group, known as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, announced it was behind several incidents, including an explosion at a synagogue in Liège, Belgium, on March 9. They also claimed involvement in an arson attack on another synagogue in Rotterdam and an explosion at a Jewish school in Amsterdam. Further, there are reports linking the group to an incident at a Jewish site in Greece, although details are sparse.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated on March 15 that these assaults were orchestrated by “a jihadi group tied to an Iranian proxy,” emphasizing the ongoing support of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in furthering terrorism around the world.

Responses and Increased Patrols

In reaction to these events, Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin labeled the synagogue explosion as a “despicable antisemitic act” aimed at the Jewish community. Prime Minister Bart De Wever addressed the situation on social media, insisting that antisemitism is an attack on societal values and calling for unwavering resistance against it.

Experts believe the ongoing conflict in Iran may have influenced this group’s decision to launch these attacks, with some suggesting a larger entity may be directing their actions.

In light of the attack in Liège, Belgium is implementing stronger protection measures, including deploying military personnel to enhance security. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken stated that the nation will not tolerate antisemitism or hatred toward Jews and is committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens.

International Support

The enhanced security measures have received approval from U.S. officials. Ambassador Yehuda Kaploun, who monitors antisemitism for the Department of State, expressed gratitude to Belgian officials for their prompt response, aiming to protect Jewish communities. Under Secretary of State Sarah B. Rogers echoed this sentiment, praising the actions taken as a necessary step against rising hatred.

Belgium has long prioritized the security of Jewish institutions since past terrorist incidents, such as the tragic 2014 shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels that resulted in four deaths.

Organizations like the World Jewish Congress have condemned the recent attacks, highlighting them as part of a worrying trend of antisemitism and violence across Europe.

In summary, Belgium is taking significant steps to protect its Jewish community in the wake of a troubling rise in antisemitic violence, drawing both national and international attention.
