Iranian Kurdish Opposition Groups Poised Yet Cautious Amid Regional Conflict

Kurdish Opposition Groups Monitor Situation in Iran

Kurdish opposition groups in Iran are watching events closely but are currently refraining from taking military action as tensions rise between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Khalid Azizi, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI), stated that while Kurdish forces are prepared to respond, they have no immediate plans for a ground offensive.

Recent reports suggest that discussions may have taken place between former President Donald Trump and Mustafa Hijri, the leader of the KDPI. However, Azizi did not confirm these conversations.

The KDPI has a long history of resistance against Iran, having faced military action from the Iranian government. Azizi recounted his personal experience during a missile attack on the KDPI headquarters in 2018, which resulted in multiple casualties and injuries.

Despite past threats, Azizi emphasized that the Kurdish resistance remains strong, with their roots stretching back to the 1979 Iranian Revolution. He mentioned that Kurdish representatives are currently in Washington, engaging with policymakers to explore the role of Kurdish forces in the evolving conflict.

However, Azizi added that the timing isn’t right for military action in Iranian Kurdistan. He pointed out the complexities of war, emphasizing that while starting a conflict may be straightforward, ending it is much more challenging.

The KDPI has also taken steps to unite various Kurdish factions by forming a coalition aimed at coordinating their political efforts. Azizi noted that this newly formed alliance has received support from both the Kurdish population and other Iranian political groups.

The future of Iran could depend on whether its citizens initiate a revolt against the current regime. Azizi called for Western nations to assist not only with military strategies but also with political support for Iranian opposition movements.

He concluded by stressing the importance of democratic inclusion for all ethnic groups in Iran, highlighting that stability in the country hinges on recognizing its multi-ethnic identity.

For now, Kurdish fighters remain cautious and reflective about their next steps. Azizi confirmed, “We have the capability, but it’s not the right moment for action.”
