BCCI Supports Vaibhav Sooryavanshi After Altercation
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the national team management have come together to support 15-year-old cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after a tense incident following a match in Dambulla. Although some critics have questioned Sooryavanshi’s behavior, BCCI officials and coaches have downplayed the situation, choosing to focus on the game.
The incident took place after India A lost a tightly contested Super Over to Sri Lanka A in the Tri-Nation A Series. Footage from the match showed Sooryavanshi reacting strongly after being verbally provoked by Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage, who reportedly taunted him with, “Match over, now you go home.” This exchange escalated quickly, resulting in Sooryavanshi pushing Halambage until teammates stepped in to separate them.
Critics across social media and commentators were quick to express their disapproval of Sooryavanshi’s actions, arguing that physical contact is inappropriate in cricket. However, the BCCI has opted to show support rather than cast blame.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia chose not to criticize Sooryavanshi, instead labeling the incident as a minor distraction. He emphasized that the board’s main focus is the team’s success during the tour, stating, “We will let our players concentrate on the tournament, and they should not be distracted by outside issues.”
New spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule echoed this sentiment while speaking ahead of India’s next One-Day International against Afghanistan. He expressed his confidence in Sooryavanshi’s character and pointed out that the situation may have been provoked by the opposing players. Bahutule stated, “It was an unfortunate incident. I know Vaibhav is a very composed kid, and he’ll learn from this experience.”
Bahutule, who has worked closely with Sooryavanshi through various youth programs, suggested that the conduct of Sri Lankan players should also be considered. He noted that young players like Sooryavanshi carry the responsibility of representing their country and assured that he would grow from this incident.
As India A prepares to face Afghanistan A in another crucial match, all eyes will be on Sooryavanshi. So far in the series, he has managed only 79 runs in three innings, but the Indian management hopes he can sparkle again, especially considering his recent success in the IPL.
The upcoming matches remain critical for all teams in the series. Sri Lanka A leads the points table with two wins, while India A is currently second with one win. Afghanistan A closely trails behind, having secured one victory in their two games, including a win over India A last week.
As the competition heats up, both supporters and players are eager to see how the tournament unfolds.
