SpaceX Acquires AI Coding Startup Cursor for $60 Billion
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is making big waves in the world of artificial intelligence (AI). On Tuesday, the company announced it will purchase the well-known AI coding startup, Cursor, for a staggering $60 billion. This move comes shortly after SpaceX’s successful public launch on the Nasdaq, which boosted its overall value to over $2 trillion, making it one of the most valuable companies worldwide.
According to reports by Reuters, SpaceX anticipates that the deal will complete by the third quarter of 2026.
A Long-Awaited Agreement
SpaceX has been keeping an eye on Cursor for several months. Back in April, the company secured an option to either buy the San Francisco-based startup for $60 billion later this year or spend $10 billion to create a corporate partnership. Ultimately, SpaceX chose to go for the full acquisition.
Since its establishment in 2022, Cursor has seen impressive growth by automating computer programming through innovative AI coding agents. Recent company data shared with Reuters showed that Cursor generated around $2.6 billion in annual revenue, highlighting its rapid expansion.
Impacts on Musk’s AI Ambitions
This acquisition is expected to significantly enhance xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, which officially partnered with SpaceX in February. It’s important to note that xAI has been trailing its major competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic in the specialized AI coding sector. By acquiring Cursor, Musk’s AI network will gain a crucial competitive edge. Additionally, this deal will give Cursor access to the extensive computing resources needed to develop cutting-edge AI models.
In March, two key engineering leaders from Cursor joined SpaceX to work on xAI and contribute to lunar exploration projects, indicating a strong collaboration ahead.
