Study Reveals Benefits of Collagen Supplements, With Limits

Collagen supplements have gained a lot of attention recently, praised as a solution for everything from slowing down aging to helping with muscle recovery. However, a new review from researchers in the U.K. suggests that while these supplements can enhance skin elasticity and alleviate arthritis pain, they might not significantly improve athletic performance or reduce wrinkles.

The study, conducted by Anglia Ruskin University, looked at 16 systematic reviews and 113 randomized controlled trials with almost 8,000 participants worldwide. This makes it one of the most comprehensive evaluations of collagen’s health benefits to date.

The findings, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, indicate that collagen supplementation can improve skin elasticity and hydration over time and may provide considerable relief from joint pain and stiffness in people with osteoarthritis. However, the review showed no considerable benefits regarding muscle recovery after exercise or the physical properties of tendons.

Lee Smith, a professor of public health at Anglia Ruskin University and a co-author of the study, emphasized that while collagen has real benefits, it shouldn’t be seen as a miracle solution. “It has credible benefits when used frequently over time, especially for skin health and managing osteoarthritis,” he said.

The researchers also highlighted that while collagen supplementation can contribute to healthier skin, it is not a quick fix for wrinkles. Instead, the improvements seem to build gradually, establishing collagen as a solid foundation for long-term skin care rather than a fast solution for aging signs.

Smith mentioned, “If we consider anti-aging as something that prevents the visible signs of aging, our findings do support this for certain factors, like skin tone and moisture.”

Though the study confirms other benefits tied to collagen, such as reducing pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis patients, it did not show any fast-acting results for performance enhancement in sports. There were mixed results concerning benefits for cholesterol management, blood sugar, blood pressure, and oral health.

Dr. Daniel Ghiyam, a physician focused on longevity in California, noted that the findings are consistent with clinical observations. “Collagen serves as targeted support but is not a substitute for overall health,” he explained. “When marketed as a catch-all solution, it doesn’t match the evidence.”

The research team also pointed out that many past studies on collagen have been funded by the supplement industry, while their review did not rely on such support.

Moreover, they called for more rigorous clinical trials to better understand long-term results, ideal dosages, and the effectiveness of different collagen sources, including marine, bovine, and plant-based options.

Despite recognizing some modest benefits for skin hydration and joint comfort, experts agree that collagen supplements should not be seen as a comprehensive solution for health. Clinical dermatologist Dr. Erum Ilyas noted that while some improvements in hydration and elasticity have been documented, strong independent evidence to routinely recommend collagen supplements remains lacking.

In conclusion, while collagen may help promote healthier skin and relieve certain joint issues, it’s essential to maintain realistic expectations and recognize that a balanced diet and overall health practices play crucial roles in skin and joint care.
