Moscow: Putin Criticizes US and Israel for Khamenei’s Assassination
Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by the United States and Israel, calling it a “cynical violation” of both moral principles and international law.
In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Iran has been a steadfast ally of Russia, and the Kremlin had previously urged restraint ahead of the US-Israeli military actions against Iran.
On Sunday, the Kremlin shared a letter from Putin to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing his heartfelt condolences following Khamenei’s assassination. He emphasized that this act was a serious breach of human morality and international standards.
Putin remembered Khamenei as a significant figure who played a vital role in strengthening the friendship between Russia and Iran. He urged Pezeshkian to extend his deepest sympathies and support to Khamenei’s family, the Iranian government, and the people of Iran.
Additionally, Russia denounced the attacks on Iran as a “dangerous adventure” that could lead to serious turmoil in the region. On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, reportedly initiated by Iran.
In 2025, Russia and Iran formalized their alliance through a strategic partnership treaty that aimed to enhance cooperation in various areas, including military affairs.
