Kerala High Court Scrutinizes CBFC’s Certification of The Kerala Story 2; Plans to View Film Before Ruling

The Kerala High Court raised important concerns regarding the certification of the controversial film The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond. The court stated it would watch the film before making a decision on three petitions that call for a hold on its release as well as the cancellation of its certification.

During the hearing, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas pointed out the responsibility of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), especially since the film presents a portrayal of a secular state like Kerala in what some see as a communal light. He remarked, “Kerala is known for its harmony. Have you thought about the implications of showing things happening across the state? This could lead to misunderstandings, which is the CBFC’s concern.”

The court acknowledged that, as the film claims to be based on true events, the worries brought up by petitioners have merit. Justice Thomas added that naming the film after Kerala increases public concern, stating, “You cannot ignore the feelings of the people when the title directly references Kerala and claims to be inspired by real events. This can potentially stir communal tensions.”

S. Sreekumar, a senior advocate representing the producers, agreed to remove current promotional materials until the court renders its judgment and proposed a special screening for the judge. The court is expected to view the film before moving forward.

This sequel follows the earlier film, The Kerala Story, which stirred controversy by depicting women from Kerala allegedly recruited into ISIS. Petitioners argue that promotional content—like the tagline “ab sahenge nahin… ladenge”—could provoke conflict and disrupt public order.

Several petitions challenge the CBFC’s certification under Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, citing concerns over misrepresentation, regional stereotypes, and the potential for communal disharmony. The court will further examine the matter after the scheduled screening.
