Snow Storms Bring Health Hazards: From Heart Risks to Hypothermia Dangers

Health Risks of Shoveling Snow Amid Record Accumulations in the Northeast

As the northeastern United States faces a significant snowstorm this week, experts are raising alarms about the potential health risks involved in shoveling heavy snow. Those who aren’t used to regular exercise or have existing health issues may face serious threats, especially with the combination of wet, heavy snow and strong winds.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, emphasized the dangers. “Heavy snow can dramatically increase the risk of injuries when people are trying to clear it away,” he noted. He also pointed out that as temperatures drop, this heavy snow can turn to ice, making surfaces slick and hazardous for walking and driving.

Individuals can easily become chilled if wet snow gets inside clothing, leading in severe cases to hypothermia. Dr. Siegel also stressed the importance of being dressed appropriately for hazardous weather conditions. He remarked on the necessity of wearing proper gloves and hats to protect against the cold.

In an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Dr. Siegel reminded everyone to look out for one another during such conditions, stating, “With strong winds, it’s easy to lose your sense of direction.”

He advised that people should stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. For those who do need to venture outside, caution is essential. Fallen power lines and branches can pose further risks.

Dr. Joshua Latzman, a cardiologist from White Plains Hospital, echoed these concerns. He explained that shoveling snow can put significant strain on the heart, especially in chilling temperatures. “People who are not in shape or are used to physical activity should be cautious,” he explained.

Research has suggested that many heart-related incidents occur in those who are inactive when they suddenly exert themselves by shoveling snow. Latzman highlighted that even breathing heavily while lifting snow can stress the heart further.

At-risk groups include those who are overweight, individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of heart-related issues. Dr. Latzman strongly advised that people with these conditions should not shovel snow at all.

“Shoveling snow can be extremely strenuous,” he concluded. “If it’s necessary, take breaks, go slow, and consider getting help from someone more physically fit.”

For those who must shovel, experts recommend doing so gradually, ensuring they’re well-dressed in layers to preserve warmth, and opting to push or sweep the snow rather than lift and throw it.

As this winter storm unfolds, staying safe and taking the necessary precautions will help everyone avoid unnecessary health risks.
