North Korea Re-elects Kim Jong Un as General Secretary of Workers’ Party

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as the general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, according to an announcement from the country’s state media, KCNA. This decision was formally made on February 22 during the party’s Ninth Congress.

KCNA highlighted that this move reflects the collective support of party members, the military, and the public. The statement praised Kim as the central figure in the country’s unity and leadership, acknowledging his efforts in enhancing the nation’s nuclear capabilities as well as its economic and military growth.

The report also outlined achievements from the past five years, emphasizing advancements in national defense and economic planning. Additionally, it reiterated Kim’s role as the leader of the country’s “socialist construction.”

Kim Jong Un has been in power since 2011 and officially took on the title of general secretary in 2021, a role previously held by his father, Kim Jong Il.

Analysts from the American Enterprise Institute suggest that North Korea might unveil new strategic weapons following the Ninth Party Congress, showcasing advances in its military ambitions. This could include updates on intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched systems, and hypersonic glide vehicles.

Looking ahead, reports suggest Kim may set new goals for military modernization between 2026 and 2030, focusing on improving second-strike capabilities and diversifying delivery systems.

Beyond military matters, the analysis indicates that Kim may tout the current five-year economic plan as a success, highlighting increased trade partnerships with Russia and China, along with efforts to bridge rural and urban development gaps.
