Morne Morkel on Varun Chakravarthy’s Performance in T20 World Cup
India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, recently discussed the impressive performance of Varun Chakravarthy in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Chakravarthy has emerged as one of India’s key bowlers, taking nine wickets in just four matches with a remarkable economy rate of 6.88.
As India gears up to face South Africa in the Super 8s, Morkel believes Chakravarthy will once again be crucial for the team. While praising the bowler’s skill, he emphasized the importance of support from the other bowlers, stating that it’s essential for them to share the pressure to help Chakravarthy remain effective.
“He’s been doing a great job for us and is one of our strike bowlers,” Morkel noted during a press conference. “But it’s vital for other bowlers to also build pressure. This will allow him to focus on breaking partnerships without feeling overwhelmed.”
Morkel also mentioned that it’s important for Chakravarthy to stay calm and trust his abilities. “If he bowls at the right pace and targets the right areas, good things will happen. He’s not in this alone,” he added.
Varun Chakravarthy’s Recent Performance
Since returning to T20I cricket in late 2024, Varun Chakravarthy has shown remarkable consistency, claiming a wicket in 17 consecutive T20 matches. The 34-year-old bowler has taken 66 wickets in 32 innings, averaging an impressive economy rate of 7.19, along with two five-wicket hauls—a notable feat for a spinner in this format.
Chakravarthy has continued to impress on the world stage. He started the World Cup strong with standout figures of 3 wickets for just 7 runs against Namibia. He then took 2 wickets for 17 runs against Pakistan, significantly helping to restrict them to 114 runs. His excellent form continued with another strong performance against the Netherlands, finishing with 3 wickets for just 14 runs.
As the team looks ahead to the next match, all eyes will be on Varun Chakravarthy to see if he can maintain his exceptional form and lead India’s bowling attack effectively.
