New Findings Shine a Light on ‘Light’ Smokers’ Health Risks

Light Smoking Linked to Serious Health Risks

Recent research highlights alarming health risks associated with light smoking, showing that smoking just a few cigarettes daily can significantly increase your chances of serious health issues. This study conducted by the American Heart Association’s Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science found that individuals who smoke as few as two to five cigarettes a day are more than twice as likely to face major health problems compared to non-smokers.

The analysis followed over 320,000 adults for 20 years and revealed that even “light smokers” face a 60% higher risk of death from any cause compared to those who don’t smoke at all.

Furthermore, the findings suggest that it can take over 30 years after quitting smoking for a person’s health to return to baseline levels.

Stacey E. Rosen, the volunteer president of the AHA, emphasized the importance of quitting smoking altogether, stating, “The message here is clear – don’t smoke. For those who do, it’s crucial to quit early in life and aim for complete cessation instead of simply reducing the number of cigarettes. Even occasional tobacco use can lead to serious health issues.”

This important study was published in the journal PLOS Medicine.
