Nobel Committee Urges Iran to Release Narges Mohammadi
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is demanding that Iran halt its severe treatment of Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who has been imprisoned since December. Reports indicate that she is enduring dangerous and cruel conditions.
The committee has received reliable information about Mohammadi being subjected to brutal treatment. During her arrest, she was attacked by officers while attending a funeral for a well-known human rights lawyer. Witnesses say she was beaten with sticks and dragged, causing serious injuries.
According to the committee, Mohammadi has also faced additional assaults, leading to extreme pain and fears of possible fractures. Jorgen Watne Frydnes, the committee chair, expressed horror over these incidents, asserting that her imprisonment is both unjust and arbitrary. He emphasized that her only “crime” is advocating for human rights and equality for women.
An Iranian prosecutor claimed that Mohammadi made provocative comments during the funeral and encouraged disruptive behavior. Over the years, she has spent significant time in Evin prison, known for its harsh conditions.
The Nobel Committee is calling for her immediate release and for the Iranian government to ensure she has access to necessary medical care. They highlighted her situation as part of a larger pattern of repression against individuals advocating for freedom and basic rights in Iran.
