India-US Trade Agreement Nears Completion; Legal and Technical Details Under Review, Says US Envoy Gor – Asia News Network

NEW DELHI – The trade deal being discussed between India and the United States is on the verge of being finalized, with negotiators now concentrating on the last legal and technical details, according to US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor.

During a recent media event in New Delhi, Gor mentioned that the two nations have reached a broad agreement on the main aspects of the pact. He indicated that the final step involves fine-tuning certain sections of the agreement before it can be formally signed.

Gor explained that the slow progress in finalizing the deal is mainly due to the difficulties associated with the complex legal and technical language necessary to complete the agreement.

The ambassador also shared insights on a proposal in the US Congress that could impose hefty tariffs of up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian oil. He emphasized that this proposal has support from lawmakers across different political parties, rather than being an initiative pushed by the White House. He pointed out that President Donald Trump has not openly supported this measure.

This proposed legislation could impact India, which has been importing Russian crude oil. However, Gor noted that Trump’s main focus is on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which he considers a vital objective for his administration.

Additionally, Gor highlighted the strong relationship between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he believes has helped strengthen ties between the two countries. He described their relationship as close and personal, with both leaders preferring a swift and results-driven approach to issues between their nations.

The ambassador recalled how Modi supported Trump following the 2020 US presidential election when Trump was out of office, noting that this support helped build trust between the two leaders. Gor emphasized that the personal connection between Trump and Modi has played a significant role in enhancing India-US relations and could facilitate quick progress on mutual interests.
