U.N. Secretary-General’s Message Sparks Controversy in Iran

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres sent a message of congratulations to Iran in honor of its Islamic Revolution’s anniversary, which sparked backlash from critics. Guterres’ letter, directed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, highlighted the importance of reflecting on Iran’s role in the global community.

This message arrives shortly after the U.N. criticized Iran for human rights violations amid a violent crackdown on anti-government protests, with reports suggesting casualty figures could be as high as 30,000.

Critics argue that Guterres’ congratulations send a confusing message. Iran analyst Banafsheh Zand remarked that it seems insensitive to celebrate the regime while many Iranians face repression and violence.

Andrew Ghalili, from the National Union for Democracy in Iran, emphasized that this message legitimizes a government known for severe human rights abuses.

Human rights organizations have been vocal about the need for accountability in Iran, urging the international community to act against systemic violations in the country.

During a recent briefing, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for Guterres, clarified that the congratulatory letter is part of routine U.N. practice, sent to all member states celebrating their national days. He emphasized that it should not be seen as endorsing Iran’s governmental policies, stating that Guterres has previously condemned the actions taken by the Iranian regime.

As Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, prepares to address the U.N. Human Rights Council, Dujarric noted this is a matter for the council, reiterating that all member states have the right to participate.
